Ornithological Club

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute Ornithological Club has regular monthly meetings from September through November and January through May. Check this page later this summer for updates on dates, times and speakers who will be visiting RTPI in the 2017-2018 season.

John Rappole will make a presentation about how climate change is effecting avian migration. John grew up in Jamestown and spent his professional career as an ornithologist for the Smithsonian Institute in Virginia. His most recent book The Avian Migrant: The Biology of Bird Migration was published by Columbia University Press in 2013. In the preface he explains that he has spent much of his lifetime investigating in the field many aspects of bird migration. In retirement he and his wife have returned to Chautauqua County to live and pursue new adventures.

Refreshment will will be offered by John and Bev Ruska. Also, of note, Bill Seleen has announced the Christmas Bird Count in Jamestown to take place on Sunday, December 17 which will be followed by a pot luck supper at RTPI while tabulating the bird sightings. The Warren count will be on Saturday, December 16. The Christmas Bird Count is considered our December meeting. If you would like to participate in this activity for a portion of the day or all day everyone is most welcome. One can join an established group or perhaps be assigned a section to cover taking a census of all bird species and numbers seen. New participants, particularly beginners, will eagerly welcomed. Contact Bill Seleen at wseleen AT stny.rr.com to indicate your interest in going on the Christmas Bird Count.
