Great Backyard Bird Count at RTPI

Does watching birds in your backyard matter to the planet? You bet it does!

RTPI is proud to participate in this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count. Now in its 27th year, this worldwide citizen science initiative, held every year over President’s Day weekend, has become a fun and important tool useful for tracking changes in winter bird ranges.

RTPI’s favorite volunteer bird nerd, Craig Thompson, will present a brief introduction to the Great Backyard Bird Count, then lead participants outside to count birds in the Peterson Preserve. Participants are advised to dress for the weather. Appropriate footwear is a must. The trails are in good shape and rated “easy” but snow or warming temperatures might make hiking a bit more challenging. In the event of truly inclement weather, we may cancel, so please check the website for updates. Beginning birders are encouraged to attend! Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Binoculars or bird guides are helpful but not required.

We will be providing coffee, tea, cider, and donuts after the walk.

This program is free; however, registration is encouraged. Click the registration link or call 716-665-2473 and speak to one of our Visitor Experience Associates.
