Art After 5 – May 25

Artists Erin Ruffino and Alex Warnick both find great inspiration in the work of Roger Tory Peterson. Erin will discuss Peterson’s legacy in the mural RTPI commissioned her to create last year, entitled “Flicker Moment.” Alex will share her insights into Peterson’s artwork as RTPI’s inaugural artist-in-residence.

Erin Ruffino resides in Fredonia, NY where she graduated in 2019 from the SUNY-Fredonia with a BFA specializing in Drawing and Painting. Her personal work focuses on figurative surrealism and she currently creates murals for businesses and institutions. Personal endeavors include camping with family at state parks, listening to podcasts, and whistling to the noisy Eastern Screech Owl in her backyard. Turkey vultures are her favorite animals. Don’t tell the screech owl.

Born in Jamestown, Peterson’s hometown, Alex Warnick’s interest in birds began as a little girl watching her brother draw a cardinal from the cover of an old Peterson field guide. A graduate of Brigham Young University-Idaho with a BA in integrated studio art, she has pursued a career in natural history art inspired by antique natural history illustrations. A 2016 recipient of the Eckelberry Endowment from the Academy of Natural Sciences by Drexel University, Alex’s art has been featured on the covers of Bird Watcher’s Digest and the Birder’s Guide, published by the American Birding Association. “I hope my artwork,” Alex says, “will introduce many others to the significance and beauty of birds so that birds can benefit the lives of people, and in turn, people can benefit the lives of birds.”
