Mateo Mena researches sound phenomena at the intersection of ecology and electromagnetism. This investigation has led him to design and craft innovative devices that blend technology and tradition, seeking to renegotiate power relations between humans and nature through art. His main work focuses on ‘Natural Radio’ broadcasts, which are sound transmissions of atmospheric and cosmic phenomena. During this research, he has worked in isolated territories, co-produced artistic experiences with local knowledge bearers, and gradually created an electromagnetic recordings diary.
Mateo will complete a week of study at RTPI in June 2026. During his residency, he aims to explore the sound similarities between acoustic and electromagnetic ‘dawn chorus’ effects through a series of audio registers. He will utilize shotgun microphones for the acoustic recordings, while the electroacoustic ones employ VLF receivers and antennas.
