What makes a good photograph?

Through an in-depth exploration of the technical and aesthetic aspects of Thomas D. Mangelsen’s large-scale images of wildlife and nature, RTPI Collections Curator, Maria Ferguson, will discuss how photographers utilize the elements of art to create compelling images. For example, what makes Mangelsen’s Reflections of Denali, 1998 (above) or Catch of the Day, 1988 (below) good photographs?

Maria, an avid photographer herself, studied Art with an emphasis in Photography (B.A.) at Penn State University and then Art History and Museum Studies (M.A.) at the University of Memphis, with research focused on the History of Photography.
