Joseph Grice – July 2022

In August of 2022, Joseph Grice spent a week immersed in the Peterson collection as a participant in RTPI’s Artist-in-Residence program. Joseph’s goals for his time here were to understand how Roger managed to so expertly bridge the gap between fine art and scientific illustration. He studied Peterson’s overall process, specific color choices, simplification versus stylization, and how his style was influenced by art movements of the time. He then used this knowledge to create a body of work based on the birds of Western New York, based on the idea of birds both as a personal connection to home and a signifier of the unique biodiversity of an area.
